Be a Greener Driver
The following will provide you with car care information and tips on how you can play your part in looking after our environment by being a greener driver!
- Car maintenance - Make sure you get your car serviced regularly, this will improve your vehicles fuel mileage and keep emissions low
- Slow down! - Speeding and hard acceleration will waste fuel.
When possible, use cruise control on motorways to maintain a steady
speed
- Did you know that keeping to the 70mph speed limit on motorways could reduce carbon emission by 890,000 tons each year!
- Change gear - Changing gear between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm not
only helps reduce fuel consumption, but also reduces noise
consumption.
- Did you know that a car at 4,000rpm makes the equivalent noise of 23 cars running at 2,000rpm!!
- Keeping your car cool - Air conditioning can add 10-14% to fuel consumption. Parking your car in the shade or using a sun screen will help to keep your car cool.
- Consolidate trips - When possible run errands at the same time, for example do the school run and weekly shopping trips at the same time.
- Use your garage! - If you have a garage you can store your car in overnight, this will help to keep it warm. It takes an average of 10 minutes for your car to heat up, this loses you fuel at a rate of 2p -3p every minute!
- Make sure your tyre pressure is correct and maintained; this will help improve your fuel efficiency by up to 2%.
